This week we are learning about legends in room 503, and what better place to start than with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. My students LOVE mysterious stories, so sparking their interest in a new topic with something they already love, makes perfect sense!
I started with this awesome product, that I found on Teachers Pay Teachers. It's worth the very small price of $3.00.
You can find it here:
The Headless Horseman
I divided the students into groups, and gave them one version of the story to study. A group leader presented the characteristics of The Headless Horseman from their version of the story. Then, we completed this Venn Diagram as a class. It sparked a great discussion about the similarities and differences between the stories.
Students naturally are drawn to different versions of the story, depending on their interests and their background knowledge. I used this interest to form debate groups!
Tomorrow, we debate. The topic? Which version deserves to be carried on throughout history, and why?
Stay tuned for the results!
Standards: 5.RL.2.1, 5.RL.2.3, 5.RL.4.2, 5.W.3.1, 5.SL.2.1
